SHS Athletes of the Week

Andrella Espino is an Athlete of the Week for Springfield High School. Andrella "Na Na" had a great week leading the Blue Devils to 3 wins including a Sectional Championship over Bowsher. Andrella batted 6-for-10 with five RBIs, including a key two-out, two-RBI hit to help defeat state-ranked Clay. Coach Rob Gwozdz said, "Andrella has been a positive role model for the younger outfielders, always leading and working with them in drills and in game situations. She also controls the dugout with cheering and words of encouragement to her teammates." Congratulations, Andrella!

McCauley White is an Athlete of the Week for Springfield High School. McCauley has been a tremendous leader for the baseball team this season. He is an outstanding defensive catcher and has done a good job as a senior showing the underclassmen "the ropes." Coach Whitmire said, "As a coach, I truly appreciate his leadership he has shown. He is the ultimate team player and puts the team above everything. He is going to Adrian College to major in education and no doubt will be an excellent teacher someday." Congratulations, McCauley!

Cloee Chappetta is an Athlete of the Week for Springfield High School. Cloee has caught every inning this season behind the plate. She has thrown out five runners this season and controls the pitching staff. Offensively Cloee is hitting .420 and only has struck out three times in 21 games. Coach Rob Gwozdz said, "Cloee is our defensive leader on the field. She controls the pitchers' emotions and keeps them calm in tough situations. Off the field Cloee is very active in school functions and activities including working on Blue Devil Radio, 97.7 FM, to promote everything going on in the school." Congratulations, Cloee!

Ryan Sharp is an Athlete of the Week for Springfield High School. Ryan was seeded first at third singles at the NLL tournament played last week. He went undefeated and won first place at third singles. Coach Mike Fink said, "Ryan is a great teammate and fun student of the game. He gets better every time he picks up his racquet. He is building confidence and trusting his coaches. I am very proud of how Ryan has matured throughout this season and it paid off in this year's tournament." Congratulations, Ryan!

Cale Whitmire is an Athlete of the Week for Springfield High School. Cale picked up two wins in relief pitching this past week as the Blue Devils defeated Napoleon & Rossford. On the season, from the leadoff position, Cale currently leads the team in hitting with a .323 batting average. He also leads the team in runs scored with 15 and stolen bases with 19. Coach Dave Whitmire said, "Cale is a very solid defensive center fielder who enjoys spending time with his teammates both on the field & off." Congratulations, Cale!

Jonah Sheppard is an Athlete of the Week for Springfield High School. This season, he has totaled 280 digs with a 2.25 serve receive rating. He has also been a reliable server, recording 23 aces while maintaining 85% accuracy. His composure in high-pressure moments, competitive mindset, and leadership have been key factors in the team’s success and will be critical as they head into the postseason. Jonah is also approaching a major milestone, nearing 1,000 career digs—an impressive achievement that reflects his dedication and consistency over the years. Coach Tyler Haughawout said, "In addition to being a major contributor on the volleyball court, Jonah is a hard working student in the classroom. His future plans are to enlist in the Air National Guard with a six year commitment while also attending BGSU for aviation. He plans to be a pilot either commercially or for the Air Force." Congratulations, Jonah!

Byron Jackson is an Athlete of the Week for Springfield High School. Two weeks ago, Byron played a key role on the 4x100 relay team that broke the school record—an accomplishment that reflects both his speed and his ability to perform under pressure. This past Friday, he continued his success by placing 3rd in the open 200m and 3rd in the high jump, demonstrating his versatility as a multi-event athlete. He also contributed to the 4x400 relay team, which earned a 2nd place finish. Coach Ellie Huss said, "Byron consistently demonstrates outstanding character, teamwork, and sportsmanship. He is a supportive teammate who encourages others, celebrates their successes, and leads by example both on and off the track. He is respectful to coaches, officials, and competitors, and handles both wins and challenges with maturity and a positive attitude." Congratulations, Byron!

Micah Young is an Athlete of the Week for Springfield High School. Micah won three straight matches last week starting with Monday vs. Central. Micah was the only Springfield player to win a match that day. On Tuesday vs. Bowling Green, the team score was tied 2-2 and Micah had split sets with his opponent. He had to win the third set for the team to win the match. Micah won 6-3. On Wednesday at Senior Night, the seniors played doubles together, which meant that Micah played up a spot at first singles. He won 6-0, 6-0 vs. Oak Harbor. Coach Mike Fink said, "Along with his excellent week last week, it is notable that the Fremont Ross team voted Micah as our player with the most sportsmanship when we played them earlier in the season. I would second their decision most days.” Congratulations, Micah!
