For Those Considering a Homeschooling Option for Children

Home Schooling in Ohio

In Ohio, parents interested in educating their children at home may do so by notifying Springfield Local Schools and meeting the requirements of Ohio law to home educate.  Notification to Springfield should be within five calendar days after commencing home education, moving into a new school district, or withdrawing from a public or nonpublic school, and by the thirtieth day of August each year thereafter. When a parent has submitted an annual home education notification to the district of residence, according to Ohio law, Springfield will provide a written acknowledgment of the superintendent's receipt of the notice to the parent or guardian not later than fourteen calendar days after receiving the notice. Notifications must include all the elements in Ohio Revised Code 3321.042.   Parents can use the Ohio Homeschool Notification Form **

The parent’s notification of home education must include: • Name, address and signature of the parent or guardian; • Name of the child; • An assurance that the home education will include instruction in the following:  English language arts; Mathematics; Science;  History; Government; and Social studies.  Please send to:

Online or virtual learning

Many parents think that online schools fall into the category of home education; this is NOT true. In Ohio, online schools are considered internet based community schools (e-schools) or district operated online learning schools.  If your child is enrolled in an online school based out of state, you must notify your district of residence that your student will be attending an out of state school.  You do not need to provide an intent to home educate
